St Benedict’s Prep returned to the Essex County Basketball Tournament in a big way by winning their first ever championship on Saturday over Immaculate Conception. By rejoining the NJSIAA, the state athletic association, the Gray Bees were eligible to participate in the competition.
Immaculate was seeded number one based on their record and past history in the tournament, with St Benedict’s the fourth seed. The game an even matchup early on, the halftime score was 24-21 in favor the Gray Bees. However St. Benedict’s owned the final period, pulling away with 25 points as opposed to 8 for Immaculate. The final tally was 57 – 34.
